Michele Heller interviews author / filmmaker Jeffrey Smith, the world’s leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices. Jeffrey describes the recently released report (September 2012) revealing the disturbing findings of a study of animals fed a genetically modified diet for 24 months, the longest and most conclusive GMO study to date. Jeffrey explains GMO (genetically modified organisms), how they differ from hybrids or other plants and animals that have been bred for certain characteristics, and the serious concerns raised by scientists since the introduction of GMO into the US food supply in 1996. Jeffrey Smith is the leading expert in the understanding of the health issues surrounding genetically modified (GMO) foods and the leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices. He is the author of Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives, recently released as a film (showing at the Lopez Library October 17th). Jeffrey is the founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), whose mission is educating policy makers and the public about genetically modified foods and crops. IRT investigates and reports GMO risks and their impact on health, the environment, the economy and agriculture, as well as the problems associated they current research, corporate practices and reporting.
